Some of the most memorable children’s stories begin with a simple question: what happens when curiosity becomes stronger than caution? In Jalapeña’s Big Barnyard Adventure, author Bridget Boland Roberts turns that question into a lively, heartwarming journey filled with animals, excitement, friendship and an important lesson about slowing down and listening.

At the center of the story is Jalapeña, a spirited Jack Russell with energy to spare. She is curious, confident and always ready to explore. Whether she is sniffing the morning grass, chasing butterflies or racing through the barnyard, Jalapeña sees adventure everywhere she looks. Her enthusiasm makes her easy to love, but it also creates the very problem that sends the story into motion.

Jalapeña lives in a busy barnyard with a colorful group of companions. Dr. Roberts is a veterinarian who cares for the horses, while Mrs. Roberts is an experienced equestrian who understands them deeply. Zoe, a wise black mare, brings calm and patience. Merlin, the barn cat, adds a mischievous edge, while Manny the goat is always ready to stir up trouble. Together, they create a warm, playful world that gives the book plenty of personality.

Still, Jalapeña cannot stop wondering about the world beyond the gate.

Dr. Roberts warns her that things outside the barnyard can be tricky, but curiosity keeps pulling at her. One day, when the gate opens, Jalapeña finally makes her move. She races into the open world, thrilled by everything around her. There are fields to run through, puddles to splash in, new scents to follow and the exciting feeling of being completely free.

For a while, the adventure feels perfect.

Then things change quickly. A hawk appears overhead. A tractor roars nearby. The weather turns dark, rain begins to fall and Jalapeña suddenly realizes she is far from the safety of home. The little dog who once believed she could handle anything finds herself frightened, cold and unsure of what to do next.

That is when she meets Gandalf, a gentle old tortoise who becomes an unexpected guide. Gandalf’s calm personality offers the perfect contrast to Jalapeña’s fast-moving nature. He teaches her that speed is not always the answer and that careful, thoughtful steps can sometimes be the best way forward.

The friendship between Jalapeña and Gandalf gives the story much of its emotional warmth. As he helps her find the path home, Jalapeña begins to understand why Dr. Roberts had warned her in the first place. By the time she returns to the barnyard, she has learned that rules are not always meant to limit adventure. Sometimes, they are there because someone cares.

Bridget Boland Roberts brings decades of equestrian expertise and experience with young riders into the story. Her background helps give the barnyard setting an authentic sense of affection and connection between people and animals.

With its lovable characters, playful energy, moments of suspense and gentle life lessons, Jalapeña’s Big Barnyard Adventure is designed to entertain young readers while giving families something meaningful to talk about afterward.

The book is currently in the publishing phase and will be available soon for readers.
