What happens when a quiet life is shattered by a stranger carrying a secret powerful enough to threaten an entire continent? In The Winter Protocol, author Daniel S Ashcroft delivers a gripping espionage thriller filled with deadly encounters, international conspiracies, political manipulation and unexpected alliances. At its centre stands a former intelligence operative who discovers that leaving the shadows behind does not mean the shadows have forgotten him.
A Peaceful Morning Turns Into a Deadly Nightmare
Sébastien Noir, a fifty-three-year-old former French Foreign Legionnaire and intelligence contractor, has spent years navigating dangerous assignments for British and American intelligence agencies. Now living in a secluded Herefordshire farmhouse, he hopes to enjoy something he rarely experienced during his career: peace.
However, one stormy December morning, an unexpected visitor arrives at his doorstep.
The stranger is badly wounded, desperate for help and carrying a mysterious envelope. His connection to Jean-Luc Hirondelle, a former Legionnaire known as Swallow, immediately captures Sébastien’s attention. Decades earlier, Swallow saved his life during a deadly encounter in Chad.
Now, that old debt is about to pull Sébastien back into a world he thought he had escaped.
Before the wounded visitor can reveal everything, he delivers a disturbing warning: “Don’t trust London.”
Suddenly, the danger becomes impossible to ignore.
Four Assassins, One Isolated House and No Escape From the Past
The situation escalates when the farmhouse loses power, its security system fails and four highly trained assassins approach the property.
Their mission is unmistakable and they are prepared to eliminate anyone standing between them and their objective.
Sébastien must rely on the instincts, experience and combat skills developed throughout his military and intelligence career. Yet time has changed him. Old injuries remain and every confrontation carries consequences.
Meanwhile, Julia Hampton, his twenty-eight-year-old housekeeper, finds herself trapped in circumstances beyond anything she imagined.
What begins as an ordinary working day becomes a terrifying struggle for survival. But Julia possesses unexpected strengths, including remarkable observational abilities and years of martial arts training.
Together, they face a nightmare that transforms their lives forever.
A Conspiracy Designed to Break Europe’s Trust
The envelope contains evidence suggesting something far more sinister than an isolated terrorist operation.
Different extremist organisations, operating across multiple countries and promoting conflicting ideologies, appear to share suspicious financial connections.
Why would seemingly unrelated groups receive support through overlapping networks?
As Sébastien and his companions investigate, an alarming possibility emerges: powerful interests may be coordinating violence and instability to undermine public confidence in governments, intelligence agencies, NATO and the European Union.
The objective is not simply destruction. It is the erosion of trust itself.
With compromised connections, hidden financial arrangements and dangerous enemies complicating every discovery, distinguishing allies from adversaries becomes increasingly difficult.
Discover an Espionage Thriller Where Loyalty Means Everything
What makes The Winter Protocol particularly compelling is its combination of international intrigue and deeply personal stakes.
Daniel S Ashcroft explores the lasting consequences of military service, the complicated nature of loyalty and the courage required to confront danger when institutional protection can no longer be assumed.
Through Sébastien’s experience and Julia’s growing determination, readers encounter a story where survival requires more than weapons or intelligence. It demands judgment, resilience and the willingness to question familiar loyalties.
For readers who enjoy realistic military action, intricate conspiracies, morally complex characters and suspenseful intelligence thrillers, The Winter Protocol offers an absorbing journey into a dangerous world of hidden agendas.
Will Sébastien uncover the truth before the conspiracy threatens everything he is fighting to protect?
